THE MEANING OF ‘THEORY’ question, it does not force us to think about metaphysics, reality, essences, being, and the like. Unlike the evaluative question, it does not involve the tricky predicate ‘(be) good.’ Unlike the teleological question, it does not appear to require that we are clear about the nature and aims of sociology.
